Sembawang | Yishun
Historical Origins
In 1903 the first Singapore-Kranji railway from Tank Road (which is part of today's Clemenceau Avenue extension to River Valley Road) to Woodlands was opened.
In 1923, the Singapore- Johor Causeway was built.
In the 1970s, HDB started development of Woodlands Town. By 1972, the first 1,300 units had been completed.
Thereafter, the Town Centre was developed, followed by more public housing and industrial development. (Source: URA Planning Report)

Location and Layout The Woodlands area is located in the Northern Region of Singapore.
It is bounded by the Bukit Timah Expressway to the west; Seletar Expressway to the south;
Sembawang Town to the east; and Straits of Johor to the north.
It covers an area of approximately 1,360 ha. The Causeway links the planning area to Johor Bahru on the Malaysian Peninsular.

Transport Facilites
The northern MRT line gives Woodlands an excellent transport connection. Woodlands is served by three MRT stations,
namely, Admiralty, Woodlands and Marsiling and is also linked to the rest of Singapore by Bukit Timah Expressway and Seletar Expressway.
According to the URA Draft Master Plan, planned transport improvements include widening the BKE and SLE expressways
to enhance the existing road network and to support future uses in the region.

Housing Options The planned total housing stock for the
Woodlands area is around 75,000 units, with over 90% high-density housing. New low-density housing, including landed housing, are
planned for the area. Hence, aspiring home-owners will soon be spoilt for choice in terms of location and housing types.

Town Amenities & Attractions
The main hub of activity is at the Woodlands MRT Station where the Woodlands Civic Centre,
Causeway Point Shopping Centre
and the Woodlands Regional Bus Interchange are located.
Under the URA Draft Master Plan, residents can expect a busier Woodlands Regional Centre
with new commercial developments to the south of Woodlands MRT station that will complement
the existing Causeway Point and Woodlands Civic Centre
to create a critical mass of community, retail and entertainment facilities.
Causeway Point Shopping Centre is a massive 10-level retail complex offering a wide range of shopping, dining and
leisure activities including a supermarket, a food court, a cineplex and two department stores.
With Woodlands Polyclinic
in the vicinity, and with the upcoming Northern General Hospital
in the North Region, residents can expect easier access to quality health and medical care. This new hospital will provide both inpatient facilities, as well as outpatient facilities
including specialist clinics, health screening, and accident and emergency services. The location of the new hospital is being finalised.
Residents are also well-supported by numerous
voluntary welfare organisations based in the Northern Region of Singapore.
Apart from the existing Woodlands Town Garden,
a new Woodlands Regional Park stretching the entire length of Riverside Road, is planned close to the Woodlands Regional Centre and existing homes.
This rustic nature park will incorporate existing natural vegetation including the mangroves along Sungei China.
Boardwalks will enable visitors to observe the rich flora and fauna and more landscaped open spaces will offer ideal locations for
family picnics. NParks will begin work on the park in 2005, targeting for
completion in 2007. (Source: URA)
