Welcome to Sembawang Town                                Yishun | Woodlands

Historical Origins
Sembawang town derived its name from the Sembawang tree. This area was originally planned as a naval base, where the bungalows west of the junction of Sembawang Road and Admiralty Road East were used as residences for the British naval officers.

Built after the 2nd World War, these bungalows retain the colonial architecture of the period. The names of the minor roads within the bungalow area also reflect their British origins: Falkland, Canada, Montreal, King's Avenue, Malta Crescent, Cyprus, St. Helena and Gibraltar Crescent.

Location and Layout
Sembawang town is located in the Northern Region of Singapore. It is bounded by Johore Straits to the north; Simpang to the east; Yishun Town to the south-east; Mandai to the south; and Woodlands Town to the south-west.

Transport Facilites
The town is served by Sembawang MRT station, which is integrated with the bus interchange and Sembawang Town Centre. According to the URA Draft Master Plan, a new bus interchange will be built in Sembawang Town Centre that will provide residents better connectivity to Woodlands, Yishun and beyond. Residents can expect the growing Sembawang Town Centre to come abuzz with more life as mixed use developments on a new White site will be integrated with Sembawang MRT station and a new bus interchange.

Housing Options
The planned total housing stock for the Sembawang area is around 39,000 units, with a mixture of landed, medium-density and high-density housing. More housing units will be available at Sembawang Town Centre, along Canberra Road and Sungei Sembawang. Home buyers can also look forward to purchasing homes within developments at two White sites near Woodlands and Sembawang MRT stations that can potentially provide a mix of uses, including retail, offices and entertainment uses.

Town Amenities & Attractions
Residents in the Sembawang Town are well served by a variety of amenities such as commercial centres, convenient transportation, community clubs, sports complex, polyclinics and schools. They are also supported by numerous voluntary welfare organisations based in the Northern Region of Singapore.

Under the URA Draft Master Plan, compatible community facilities will be housed under one roof, where possible, for greater convenience to residents and more optimal use of land. This includes a new CC for Sembawang residents that will be co-located with the existing Sembawang Neighbourhood Police Centre at Sembawang Drive.

Also, with the upcoming Northern General Hospital, residents can expect easier access to quality health and medical care in the North Region. This new hospital will provide both inpatient facilities, as well as outpatient facilities including specialist clinics, health screening, and accident and emergency services. The location of the new hospital is being finalised.

Residents in the Sembawang area are well served by parks and waterfront recreational facilities, including Sembawang Park and Sembawang Sea Sports Centre.

Sembawang Beach is also popular with families and fishermen who once lived in nearby coastal villages. The URA Draft Master Plan includes plans for a Sembawang Activity Corridor stretching from the MRT to Jalan Legundi. This corridor will involve more development on the vacant site next to the MRT at Canberra Road, a new Sembawang Sports Complex with swimming pool on the old Chong Pang Village site, more open air dining in the Jalan Legundi area, and a park connector pathway along the river to Yishun Avenue 2. There are also plans for a park connector from Woodlands through Sembawang to Yishun, all along underneath the MRT.

The bustling Jalan Legundi area around Sembawang Shopping Centre is set to flourish further as shophouses along Jalan Legundi and Jalan Tampang are re-zoned to Residential with Commercial at First Storey. Already a food haven with a seafood centre, satay club and other food and beverage outlets, its vibrancy will be further enhanced by the proposed introduction of more outdoor refreshment spaces. This will complement the upcoming Sembawang Sports Complex and reinforce the recreational character of the area.
